Can a student get a job? no
Indianapolis is known for many things - the Indianapolis 500, the circle city, the crossroads of America, an amateur sports leader, and a large center for the arts. Picture a section of the city with one of the highest concentrations of abandoned homes in the United States. A place where 8 out of every 10 children only get two meals a day but only if they're in school. A place where less than 30 percent of students graduate from high school and more than 50 percent of adults are illiterate.
Poverty is stubborn. Random acts of kindness won't budge it, well intentioned as they may be. It takes methodical, consistent programming that reaches both parents and children. Only when the entire family is working together do the shackles of poverty begin to loosen. It takes what we call a continuum of care from mothers-to-be through childhood and into adulthood. We invite you to come and make a difference for eternity in this world around Shepherd Community Center through our summer project experience. Our number one commitment for the summer is to your growth as a student both spiritually and as a leader.
The Heart of the City Summer Project is a partnership with Shepherd Community Center and Campus Crusade for Christ. This is designed to offer young, emerging leaders a dynamic, hands-on ministry experience in the urban culture. Shepherd Community Center has a rich history of working with college students for the past 18 years. You will be immersed in ministry with children and teens during the day which may include day camps, mentoring high school students in college applications, a week long educational trip with teens, evangelistic outreaches, and work projects. Nurture and personal development will be fostered in a community atmosphere with others on the project. There will be excellent training, discipleship, and a Shepherd Community/CCC staff mentor for the summer. Your housing and most meals will be provided. You will also be given a small financial stipend twice per month to help with incidental expenses or for your savings.
Are you ready for an adventure that will mark your life and send you back to campus and into life with a purpose? Come join us!
